Polyvinyl alcohol + povidone is a combination ophthalmic solution used primarily as an artificial tear or lubricant for the temporary relief of burning, irritation, and discomfort due to dryness of the eye or exposure to wind or sun. Polyvinyl alcohol acts as a water-soluble synthetic polymer that mimics natural tears by providing lubrication and moisture to the ocular surface. Povidone serves as a demulcent (lubricant) that helps retain moisture on the eye's surface. This combination does not have direct pharmacological activity but works by forming a protective film over the cornea to relieve symptoms associated with dry eyes[1][3][5][7]. It is available over-the-counter in various formulations.
