Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Porcine fibrin sealant is a biological tissue adhesive and hemostatic agent derived from porcine plasma. It is a two-component system consisting of porcine-derived fibrinogen (with coagulation factor XIII) and porcine-derived thrombin (with calcium chloride). When mixed, these components mimic the final stage of the natural coagulation cascade, converting fibrinogen into a stable, cross-linked fibrin clot. This clot acts as a physical barrier to seal tissue defects, prevent fluid or air leaks, and promote wound healing by providing a scaffold for fibroblast and capillary proliferation. It is used as an adjunctive treatment to control surgical bleeding, achieve watertight closure (such as in dural repair), and prevent complications like anastomotic leakage or esophageal stricture following surgical procedures.
