Potassium hydrogen DL-aspartate is a small molecule electrolyte replenisher consisting of the potassium salt of racemic DL-aspartic acid. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of potassium deficiency (hypokalemia) and associated cardiovascular conditions, particularly cardiac arrhythmias and heart rate disorders. The aspartate moiety is thought to act as an effective carrier that facilitates the transport of potassium ions into the intracellular space, which is critical for maintaining the resting membrane potential of cardiomyocytes and supporting myocardial function. In clinical practice, it is frequently formulated in combination with magnesium aspartate to address combined electrolyte deficiencies, as magnesium is a necessary cofactor for the sodium-potassium ATPase pump. Experimental studies have also suggested that it may provide protective effects against oxidative stress-induced cell damage and has been explored for applications in liver conditions such as hepatitis and general liver dysfunction.
