Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Potassium chloride + sodium acetate + magnesium chloride + sodium gluconate + sodium chloride is a sterile, nonpyrogenic, isotonic multi-electrolyte intravenous solution marketed as **Plasma-Lyte A** and also referred to in related branded presentations such as **Physiolyte** and **Isolyte S**. Developed and manufactured by **B. Braun Medical**, it is a **small molecule electrolyte combination** used as a source of water and electrolytes for hydration and correction of fluid and electrolyte disturbances, and as an alkalinizing agent. Its pharmacologic effect is produced by replenishing extracellular fluid constituents including sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, acetate, and gluconate; acetate and gluconate are metabolized to bicarbonate precursors and help buffer metabolic acidosis. The product is used in adults and pediatric patients for intravenous fluid and electrolyte replacement, and related branded formulations are also used for general irrigation, rinsing, and washing purposes.
