Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Potassium chloride + sodium acetate + sodium chloride + magnesium chloride + sodium gluconate is a **sterile, isotonic balanced crystalloid electrolyte solution** marketed primarily as **Plasma-Lyte A** for intravenous administration and as **Physiolyte** for irrigating use. It is a **small-molecule mineral salt combination product** developed and marketed by Baxter and also marketed in irrigant form by B. Braun. The formulation supplies sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, acetate, and gluconate to expand and maintain extracellular fluid volume, correct or prevent electrolyte depletion, and provide an alkalinizing effect because acetate and gluconate are metabolized to bicarbonate precursors. Clinically it is used in adults and pediatric patients as a source of water and electrolytes for hydration and correction of dehydration or electrolyte imbalance, and in irrigant presentations for general irrigation, rinsing, and washing.
