Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Potassium chloride + sodium lactate + dextrose monohydrate + calcium chloride + sodium chloride** is a marketed multi-component intravenous crystalloid and carbohydrate solution used for fluid and electrolyte replacement, alkalinization, and limited caloric support. It is formulated as an injection solution for parenteral use and has been marketed under the brand names **Lactated Ringer's and Dextrose** and **Potassium Chloride in Lactated Ringer's and Dextrose**. The product contains inorganic electrolytes plus dextrose monohydrate: sodium and chloride help restore extracellular fluid volume and electrolyte balance, potassium chloride provides potassium supplementation, calcium chloride supplies calcium, sodium lactate is metabolized to bicarbonate and contributes an alkalinizing effect, and dextrose provides a source of carbohydrate calories and supports blood glucose. Rather than acting through a single molecular receptor, the drug exerts broad physiologic effects on water balance, electrolyte homeostasis, and acid-base balance. It has been associated with Hospira as developer/manufacturer and is indicated for patients requiring parenteral potassium chloride administration and replacement of extracellular fluid and electrolyte losses with minimal carbohydrate calories, including use as a source of water, electrolytes, and calories or as an alkalinizing agent in adults and pediatric patients.
