Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Potassium nitrate + sodium fluoride is a combination therapeutic used to manage dentin hypersensitivity, particularly during dental bleaching procedures. This combination was the subject of a randomized, double-blind clinical trial (NCT03323372) conducted by the Universidade Federal do Amazonas (UFAM), which compared the efficacy of different concentrations (e.g., Ultra EZ and Desensibilize KF 2%). The mechanism of action is dual-fold: potassium nitrate acts as a chemical desensitizer by increasing extracellular potassium ion levels, which depolarizes the membranes of intradental nerve fibers and prevents them from repolarizing, thereby blocking the transmission of pain signals. Sodium fluoride acts as a mechanical desensitizer by precipitating calcium fluoride crystals that occlude exposed dentinal tubules, reducing the hydrodynamic flow of fluid that triggers sensitivity. This combination is typically applied topically as a gel using dental trays.
