Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Povidone-iodine + glycyrrhizic acid is an investigational topical combination therapy being developed by Menoufia University for the prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and ventilator-associated tracheobronchitis (VAT). The formulation consists of 0.5% povidone-iodine, a broad-spectrum antiseptic, and 2.5 mg/ml glycyrrhizic acid, which possesses antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Administered as nasal and oropharyngeal sprays, the therapy aims to decontaminate the upper respiratory tract of mechanically ventilated patients to prevent the aspiration of pathogenic microbes into the lungs. The product is manufactured under the authority of Mundipharma, with the extraction method for the glycyrrhizic acid components developed by the Menoufia Faculty of Science.
