Overview

PP1131 is an investigational biologic therapy consisting of a cocktail of 12 natural lytic bacteriophages designed to treat burn wound infections. [8] Developed by Phaxiam Therapeutics (formerly Pherecydes Pharma), it specifically targets infections caused by the bacteria *Pseudomonas aeruginosa* and *Escherichia coli*. [1, 4] The therapeutic principle, known as phage therapy, uses natural bacterial viruses to infect and destroy target bacteria. PP1131 was evaluated in the PhagoBurn trial, a Phase I/II study comparing its efficacy as a topical treatment against the standard of care, 1% silver sulfadiazine cream. [2, 3] The trial was terminated in January 2017 due to insufficient efficacy, as PP1131 demonstrated a slower reduction in bacterial burden compared to the standard treatment. [2, 3] This outcome was attributed to the administration of a much lower concentration of phages than intended due to a decrease in the product's titre after manufacturing. [2, 3]
