Overview

This therapeutic regimen consists of a short course of oral prednisolone combined with a longer course of intranasal corticosteroids. It is being investigated by the Hotel Dieu de France Hospital as a non-surgical alternative for treating pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) caused by adenotonsillar hypertrophy. Prednisolone is a synthetic glucocorticoid that exerts potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor, thereby reducing the size of lymphoid tissue (adenoids and tonsils) that obstructs the airway. The intranasal corticosteroids provide localized anti-inflammatory action to further reduce upper airway resistance and improve symptoms in children aged 18 months to 8 years.
