Overview
Prednisolone acetate + nystatin is a combination drug containing a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid (prednisolone acetate) and a polyene antifungal (nystatin). Prednisolone acetate acts as an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive agent by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor, modulating gene expression to inhibit pro-inflammatory mediators and promote anti-inflammatory pathways. Nystatin acts as an antifungal, disrupting the integrity of fungal cell membranes by binding to ergosterol, leading to cell death, and is especially effective against Candida species. This combination is not a standard marketed product, but analogous combinations (e.g., corticosteroid plus antifungal) are used for treating inflammatory or steroid-responsive cutaneous or mucocutaneous fungal infections, particularly those involving Candida, with the steroid relieving inflammation and the antifungal inhibiting fungal growth[2][3][5][7].
