Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Prednisone + azithromycin is a combination therapy consisting of two distinct drugs: - **Prednisone** is a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid that acts as an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant. It works by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor, modulating gene expression, and suppressing immune responses and inflammation. - **Azithromycin** is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby preventing bacterial growth. It has broad-spectrum activity against many Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria. This combination may be used in clinical practice for certain conditions where both inflammation (requiring corticosteroids) and infection (requiring antibiotics) are present or suspected. For example, it has been studied in children with primary nephrotic syndrome to increase steroid sensitivity[5], as well as in upper respiratory infections when both anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects are needed[4][6]. The combination does not have a unique brand name or fixed-dose formulation; it refers to concurrent use of these two agents.
