SAMS is a multi-drug combination regimen consisting of prednisone, azithromycin, montelukast, and Symbicort (budesonide/formoterol). Developed by the Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital, it is being evaluated in a pilot study to prevent the development of transplant-associated chronic lung diseases, including bronchiolitis obliterans, cryptogenic organizing pneumonia, and interstitial lung disease, in allogeneic stem cell transplant recipients following a viral respiratory tract infection. The regimen aims to eliminate damaging immune responses triggered by viruses through a combination of systemic and inhaled corticosteroids, a leukotriene receptor antagonist, a long-acting bronchodilator, and a macrolide with immunomodulatory properties.
