This is a combination therapy consisting of prednisone, a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid, and recombinant human interleukin-11 (rhIL-11), a cytokine also known as oprelvekin. Prednisone acts primarily as an immunosuppressant and anti-inflammatory agent by modulating gene expression through the glucocorticoid receptor. Recombinant human interleukin-11 stimulates thrombopoiesis (platelet production) via activation of the IL-11 receptor alpha subunit and downstream STAT3 signaling pathways. The combination has been studied for its efficacy in treating immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), where it may increase platelet counts more effectively than prednisone alone, particularly in newly diagnosed or severe cases. rhIL-11 is also used to reduce chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia and has additional roles in modulating immune responses[4][9][10].
