Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Prevnar 13 is a 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) developed by Pfizer. It is composed of purified capsular polysaccharides from 13 serotypes of *Streptococcus pneumoniae* (1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F, and 23F), each individually conjugated to a non-toxic diphtheria toxoid carrier protein known as CRM197. By conjugating the polysaccharides to a protein carrier, the vaccine induces a T-cell dependent immune response, which is more robust and leads to immunological memory compared to polysaccharide-only vaccines. It is indicated for the prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease (including sepsis, meningitis, and bacteremia) and pneumococcal pneumonia caused by the vaccine serotypes in infants, children, and adults. In specific high-risk populations, such as hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients, it is often administered in a multi-dose series followed by the 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23).
