Overview

Prilocaine + felypressin is a combination local anesthetic and vasoconstrictor formulation used primarily in dentistry. Prilocaine is an amide-type local anesthetic that works by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve cell membranes, thereby preventing the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses and providing pain relief. Felypressin is a synthetic analogue of the hormone vasopressin that acts as a non-catecholamine vasoconstrictor by stimulating V1 receptors on vascular smooth muscle. This combination is particularly advantageous for patients with cardiovascular disease or other conditions where epinephrine (adrenaline) is contraindicated. A Phase 4 clinical trial conducted by Taibah University evaluated the efficacy of a 3% prilocaine and 0.03 I.U./ml felypressin formulation for the extraction of maxillary teeth, finding it to be as effective as 4% articaine with epinephrine.
