Probiotics + lycium barbarum polysaccharides is a combination product being investigated for the treatment of cancer-related fatigue in patients with solid tumors. The combination consists of live microorganisms (probiotics) and complex carbohydrates extracted from Goji berries (Lycium barbarum). The proposed mechanism of action is synergistic; the probiotics aim to modulate the gut microbiome, which can be disrupted by cancer therapies, while the Lycium barbarum polysaccharides are believed to exert their own immunomodulatory, antioxidant, and anti-fatigue effects. [4, 7] Studies suggest that probiotics may help alleviate side effects of cancer treatment like fatigue and diarrhea, [1, 2] and that Lycium barbarum polysaccharides have demonstrated anti-fatigue properties in preclinical models. [8, 11] The combination is being studied in a clinical trial sponsored by West China Hospital, Sichuan University.
