Overview

This is a combination therapy consisting of probiotics (commonly lactobacillus species such as Lactobacillus acidophilus or bifidobacterium infantis) and the antibiotic metronidazole. Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole-class small molecule antibiotic with both antibacterial and antiprotozoal activity, primarily used to treat anaerobic bacterial infections and certain protozoal diseases. Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host by restoring or maintaining healthy microbiota balance. The rationale for combining these agents is to enhance treatment efficacy—particularly in conditions like bacterial vaginosis—by eradicating pathogenic bacteria with metronidazole while simultaneously replenishing beneficial flora with probiotics. Clinical studies suggest this combination may improve cure rates and reduce recurrence compared to metronidazole alone[2][4]. However, some studies report similar recurrence rates between combination therapy and monotherapy[6][9].
