Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Probiotics-Bio-plus is a multi-strain probiotic formulation specifically evaluated in clinical research at Meir Medical Center for the prevention of major complications in patients with liver cirrhosis. The formulation consists of four bacterial strains: *Lactobacillus acidophilus*, *Lactobacillus bulgaricus*, *Bifidobacterium lactis*, and *Streptococcus thermophilus*. Its mechanism of action centers on the modulation of the gut-liver axis; by altering the intestinal microflora, it aims to reduce the production and absorption of gut-derived toxins such as ammonia and decrease bacterial translocation across the intestinal wall. This intervention is primarily intended to prevent the development of hepatic encephalopathy and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in patients with compensated or decompensated cirrhosis.
