ProGyne (Progena Biopharma)

ProGyne is a multi-ingredient botanical dietary supplement manufactured by Progena Professional Formulations. It was specifically evaluated in the Herbal Alternatives for Menopause Trial (HALT), a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). The formula contains a complex blend of ten ingredients: black cohosh, alfalfa, chaste tree berry, dong quai root, false unicorn root, licorice root, oats straw, pomegranate fruit, Siberian ginseng, and boron. It was designed to alleviate vasomotor symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes and night sweats, through the action of phytoestrogens—plant-derived compounds that can mimic or modulate the effects of estrogen in the body. However, clinical trial results published in 2006 indicated that the formula did not provide a statistically significant reduction in the frequency or severity of hot flashes compared to placebo in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women.
