Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Promethazine + phenylephrine is a fixed-dose combination pharmaceutical product containing the first-generation antihistamine promethazine and the sympathomimetic decongestant phenylephrine. Promethazine functions primarily as a competitive Histamine H1 receptor antagonist, which alleviates upper respiratory symptoms such as sneezing, rhinorrhea, and watery eyes, while also providing sedative and antiemetic effects. Phenylephrine acts as a selective Alpha-1 adrenergic receptor agonist, inducing vasoconstriction in the nasal mucosa to reduce swelling and relieve nasal congestion. This combination is indicated for the symptomatic relief of the common cold, hay fever, and other upper respiratory allergies or flu-like symptoms. While the historical branded product Phenergan VC has been discontinued, the combination remains widely available in various generic syrup formulations.
