Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This anesthetic regimen is a combination of three established pharmacological agents: propofol, fentanyl, and sevoflurane. It was utilized as a research protocol by Heidelberg University in a randomized controlled trial (NCT02794896) to investigate the effects of anesthetic depth on the immune response in patients undergoing extended shoulder surgery. In this 'balanced anesthesia' approach, propofol is typically used for the induction of anesthesia, fentanyl serves as a potent opioid analgesic to manage perioperative pain, and sevoflurane is an inhaled volatile anesthetic used for the maintenance of the hypnotic state. The study specifically examined how varying depths of anesthesia, monitored via the bispectral index (BIS), influenced cellular immunity, including the proliferation of Natural Killer (NK) cells, T-cells, and the activity of monocytes and neutrophils.
