Overview

Propofol + oxygen refers to the co-administration of the intravenous anesthetic agent propofol with supplemental oxygen, a common practice in anesthesia and critical care. Propofol is a small molecule used for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia and sedation. It acts primarily as a positive allosteric modulator of the GABA-A receptor, enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission in the central nervous system, leading to sedation, hypnosis, and amnesia[1][2][8]. Propofol also has secondary actions including inhibition of NMDA receptors and modulation of calcium influx through slow calcium ion channels[8]. Oxygen is not itself a drug but an essential medical gas administered to prevent hypoxemia during procedures requiring sedation or anesthesia. The combination does not represent a unique pharmaceutical product but rather describes standard clinical practice where propofol-induced respiratory depression necessitates supplemental oxygen administration.
