Overview

Propofol + succinylcholine is a combination of two intravenous agents commonly used in anesthesia induction for rapid sequence intubation and short surgical procedures. Propofol is a sedative-hypnotic agent that induces loss of consciousness by potentiating the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at the GABA-A receptor, resulting in CNS depression[2][5][10]. Succinylcholine is a depolarizing neuromuscular blocker that acts as an agonist at nicotinic acetylcholine receptors on the motor endplate, causing transient muscle fasciculations followed by paralysis[6][8]. This combination provides both rapid unconsciousness (via propofol) and profound muscle relaxation (via succinylcholine), facilitating tracheal intubation or other procedures requiring complete immobility. Propofol was developed by Imperial Chemical Industries (now AstraZeneca), while succinylcholine has been produced by various manufacturers since its introduction. The combination does not have unique brand names but is widely used in clinical practice for anesthesia induction.
