Propolis mouthwash is a water-based topical formulation developed by Mashhad University of Medical Sciences for the prevention and treatment of radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer. The active ingredient, propolis, is a natural resinous substance collected by honeybees from various plant sources, known for its high content of flavonoids and phenolic compounds. These constituents provide a broad spectrum of biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, and wound-healing properties. In clinical evaluations, the mouthwash is used three times daily during radiotherapy to reduce the severity of mucosal damage. The product is manufactured by Soren Tektoos and has been evaluated in a triple-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled Phase 2 pilot clinical trial, which suggested it is a safe and effective intervention for managing mucositis in oncology patients.
