This combination therapy consists of pterostilbene (50 mg) and a specific bioflavonoid-rich grape extract (100 mg, ShanStar Concord Grape), administered twice daily. Pterostilbene is a natural phenolic stilbene found in blueberries and other berries, chemically related to resveratrol. It functions as a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha (PPAR-α) agonist, a mechanism of action similar to fibrate drugs used in the management of lipid disorders. The grape extract component provides a concentrated source of phenolics and bioflavonoids, which possess antioxidant properties. This investigational combination was evaluated by the University of Mississippi Medical Center in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 2/3 clinical trial (NCT01267227) for the treatment of hyperlipidemia and hypertension. Clinical findings suggested that the addition of grape extract to pterostilbene therapy helped reduce systolic blood pressure and prevented the increase in LDL cholesterol that was observed with pterostilbene monotherapy.
