This is a fixed-dose combination anthelmintic drug containing three active ingredients—pyrantel, oxantel, and mebendazole. Each component targets intestinal nematode infections through distinct mechanisms: - Pyrantel is a depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent that paralyzes susceptible worms by acting as an agonist at nicotinic acetylcholine receptors on the parasite muscle cell membrane, leading to their expulsion from the gastrointestinal tract. - Oxantel is structurally related to pyrantel and has enhanced activity against Trichuris species (whipworm), also acting via neuromuscular blockade but with greater specificity for certain nematodes. - Mebendazole inhibits microtubule synthesis in helminths by binding to β-tubulin, thereby blocking glucose uptake and depleting energy stores in the worm. The combination aims to broaden the spectrum of activity against common soil-transmitted helminths such as Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm), Trichuris trichiura (whipworm), and hookworms. Clinical studies have shown that this triple therapy can be effective for mixed intestinal nematode infections[9]. The product Quantrel was developed for this purpose.
