pyridoxine + amino acids is an investigational combination therapy developed by Changzhou Wujin People's Hospital for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This therapeutic approach combines pyridoxine (Vitamin B6), a vital coenzyme in amino acid metabolism and neurotransmitter synthesis, with a mixture of essential and non-essential amino acids. The rationale for this combination in ALS is to provide metabolic support to stressed motor neurons, potentially reducing glutamate-mediated excitotoxicity by facilitating the conversion of glutamate to GABA via pyridoxal phosphate-dependent glutamate decarboxylase. Additionally, the amino acid component aims to address the hypermetabolic state and muscle wasting characteristic of ALS. A Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT02442687) was initiated to evaluate the efficacy of this combination in slowing disease progression and improving the quality of life for ALS patients.
