Overview

This is a combination of three B-vitamins (B6, B12, and folate) used as a therapeutic intervention to lower plasma homocysteine levels. In the context of the Brigham and Women's Hospital pilot study, it was evaluated as part of a multi-drug regimen (including pravastatin, aspirin, and ramipril) to prevent accelerated atherosclerosis in patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Elevated homocysteine is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and these vitamins serve as essential cofactors in the metabolic pathways that convert homocysteine to methionine or cysteine.
