Overview

Qi Huang Pei Yuan Tang + reduced glutathione is a combination therapy comprising a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal compound and the antioxidant tripeptide reduced glutathione (GSH). Investigated primarily for the treatment of acute kidney injury (AKI) resulting from renal ischemia-reperfusion (R/I), this combination exerts synergistic protective effects by targeting multiple pathways involved in oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis. Experimental evidence in rat models demonstrates that the combination significantly improves renal function—reducing serum creatinine and urea nitrogen levels—and preserves renal tissue architecture by attenuating tubular epithelial cell detachment and mesangial congestion. The therapeutic mechanism is driven by the up-regulation of the Nrf2/HO-1/GPX4 signaling pathway, which enhances the endogenous antioxidant response and mitigates ferroptosis-related damage. This strategy represents an integrative approach combining botanical extracts with established biochemical antioxidants to achieve multi-target renoprotection.
