Overview

Quadrivalent human papillomavirus (types 6, 11, 16, 18) recombinant vaccine (Hansenula polymorpha) is a prophylactic vaccine candidate developed by Shanghai Bowei Biotechnology. It is produced using a recombinant *Hansenula polymorpha* (a methylotrophic yeast) expression system, which is used to generate the L1 major capsid proteins of HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18. These proteins self-assemble into virus-like particles (VLPs) that are structurally similar to the native virus but lack infectious genetic material. The vaccine is designed to elicit a protective immune response by inducing neutralizing antibodies against the targeted HPV types: types 16 and 18 are high-risk genotypes associated with approximately 70% of cervical cancers, while types 6 and 11 are low-risk genotypes responsible for the majority of genital warts. The vaccine is currently in Phase 3 clinical trials in China, targeting various female age groups (9-26 and 18-45 years) for the prevention of HPV infection, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), and related malignancies.
