Overview

The quadrivalent human papillomavirus recombinant vaccine (types 6, 11, 16, 18), marketed as Gardasil, is a prophylactic vaccine designed to prevent infections caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV) types 6, 11, 16, and 18. It is composed of highly purified virus-like particles (VLPs) derived from the major capsid L1 protein of these four HPV types. These VLPs are non-infectious as they lack viral DNA, but they effectively stimulate the body's immune system to produce antibodies, thereby conferring immunity against future HPV infections. Developed by Merck & Co., this vaccine is indicated for the prevention of various HPV-related diseases, including cervical, vulvar, vaginal, and anal cancers, as well as genital warts and precancerous or dysplastic lesions caused by the targeted HPV types.
