The quadrivalent influenza vaccine (MDCK cell) is an inactivated split-virion vaccine developed by the Wuhan Institute of Biological Products (WIBP), a subsidiary of Sinopharm's China National Biotec Group (CNBG). Unlike traditional influenza vaccines produced in embryonated chicken eggs, this vaccine is manufactured using Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cell culture technology. This method avoids egg-adaptation mutations that can reduce vaccine effectiveness and allows for a more scalable and rapid production process. The vaccine is designed to provide protection against four distinct influenza virus strains: two influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and two influenza B lineages (Victoria and Yamagata). It is currently in Phase 3 clinical trials for the prevention of influenza in individuals aged 3 years and older.
