Overview

The quadrivalent influenza vaccine (split virion, MDCK cell) is an inactivated vaccine developed by Zhejiang Tianyuan Bio-Pharmaceutical (a subsidiary of Sinovac) for the prevention of seasonal influenza. Unlike traditional influenza vaccines produced in embryonated chicken eggs, this formulation utilizes Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cell culture technology. This approach mitigates the risk of egg-adaptive mutations that can alter the antigenic profile of the vaccine strains, potentially leading to improved vaccine effectiveness and providing a suitable option for individuals with egg allergies. The 'split virion' process involves disrupting the inactivated virus with detergents to reduce reactogenicity while maintaining immunogenicity. The vaccine is quadrivalent, containing antigens from four distinct influenza virus strains: two influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and two influenza B lineages (Victoria and Yamagata). It is administered via intramuscular injection and is intended to stimulate the production of neutralizing antibodies against the viral hemagglutinin protein, thereby preventing viral attachment and infection.
