Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Quirem Spheres (QuiremSpheres) are poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) microspheres loaded with the radioactive isotope holmium-166 (166Ho), designed for transarterial radioembolization (TARE) of liver malignancies. Developed by Quirem Medical (now part of Terumo), these microspheres lodge in the tumor vasculature and deliver localized, high-energy beta-radiation (1.81 MeV) to induce tumor necrosis. A unique feature of holmium-166 is its dual emission profile; in addition to therapeutic beta particles, it emits gamma radiation (81 keV) and is paramagnetic, allowing for real-time visualization and precise post-treatment dosimetry via SPECT/CT and MRI. This theranostic capability distinguishes it from yttrium-90 based microspheres, enabling personalized treatment planning. It is indicated for primary liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) and secondary liver metastases.
