Drug intelligence / Profile preview
r(P)ApoB L-Ala is a preclinical recombinant host defense peptide (HDP) derived from human apolipoprotein B-100 (specifically residues 887–922). It is a single-point mutant variant of the parent peptide r(P)ApoBLPro, featuring a proline-to-alanine substitution at position 7 (Pro7Ala). Developed primarily by researchers at the University of Naples Federico II, the peptide exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial, bactericidal, and anti-biofilm activities against both Gram-negative (e.g., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae) and Gram-positive (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis) bacteria. It acts by interacting with bacterial cell surface components such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or lipoteichoic acid (LTA), leading to membrane depolarization and cell death. It has been investigated for the prevention of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) and wound healing, often demonstrating synergistic effects when combined with conventional antibiotics.
