Overview

R-(+)-FPFS-1179 is a small molecule neuroprotective agent and an analogue of BPAP (1-(benzofuran-2-yl)-2-propylaminopentane). Developed by Fujimoto Pharmaceutical Group, it belongs to the benzofuranyl-propylaminoalkane series. While the lead compound BPAP is primarily characterized as a catecholaminergic and serotonergic activity enhancer (CaeSE), R-(+)-FPFS-1179 is specifically noted for its potent anti-apoptotic and mitochondrial-stabilizing properties. It acts by directly stabilizing the mitochondrial membrane potential and preventing the mitochondrial permeability transition (mPT), while also inducing the expression of the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2. These mechanisms protect dopaminergic neurons from toxins such as N-methyl(R)salsolinol, suggesting potential therapeutic utility in the treatment of Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders.
