R-(+)-FPFS-1180 is a small molecule neuroprotective agent and an analogue of R-(-)-BPAP, developed by Fujimoto Pharmaceutical. It belongs to the catecholaminergic and serotonergic activity enhancer (CaeSE) class of compounds. R-(+)-FPFS-1180 specifically demonstrates the ability to prevent apoptosis in dopaminergic cells by stabilizing the mitochondrial membrane potential and inducing the expression of the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2. Unlike the parent compound BPAP, which is levorotatory, R-FPFS-1180 is a dextrorotatory enantiomer that has shown higher potency in mitochondrial protection. It has been studied primarily in the context of Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders, where it protects neurons from toxin-induced cell death.
