R-(-)-FPFS-1183 is a synthetic small molecule and a member of the benzofuranyl-propylaminopentane (BPAP) derivative series. It functions as a catecholaminergic and serotoninergic activity enhancer (CAE/SAE), a unique pharmacological class that selectively increases the impulse-evoked release of dopamine and serotonin in the central nervous system. Developed by Fujimoto Pharmaceutical, R-(-)-FPFS-1183 is the R-enantiomer of the 5-fluoro analogue of BPAP. It has demonstrated potent neuroprotective effects in preclinical models, primarily through the induction of the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 and the stabilization of mitochondrial membrane potential. These properties make it a candidate for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, as well as psychiatric conditions like depression, where it aims to restore monoaminergic signaling without the risk of neurotransmitter depletion or excessive non-impulse-related release.
