R-3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine

R-3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (R-MDMA) is the R(-) enantiomer of the empathogen MDMA. It is being developed by MindMed in collaboration with the Liechti Lab at University Hospital Basel. Unlike the racemic mixture or the S(+) enantiomer, R-MDMA is hypothesized to retain the pro-social and empathogenic effects of MDMA while exhibiting significantly reduced stimulant activity, neurotoxicity, hyperthermia, and abuse liability. The drug acts primarily as a serotonin releaser. While racemic MDMA is in late-stage clinical development for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), R-MDMA is being investigated as a potentially safer alternative for the treatment of social anxiety, social functioning in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and PTSD.
