Overview

Merieux Inactivated Rabies Vaccine (MIRV), also known as Imovax Rabies, is a sterile, lyophilized, inactivated human diploid cell vaccine (HDCV) used for pre-exposure and post-exposure prophylaxis against rabies. Developed and manufactured by Sanofi (formerly the Merieux Institute / Pasteur Merieux), the vaccine contains the inactivated Wistar rabies virus strain PM/WI38 1503-3M, which is cultured on human diploid cells and inactivated using beta-propiolactone. It works by stimulating the host immune system to produce rabies virus-neutralizing antibodies (RVNA), preventing the virus from entering the peripheral nerves and reaching the central nervous system. MIRV is administered via intramuscular or intradermal injection and is widely recognized as an international standard for rabies prevention.
