Drug intelligence / Profile preview
PVRV-SF (Purified Vero Cell Rabies Vaccine - Serum Free) is an inactivated rabies vaccine developed by Sanofi Pasteur. It is produced using a serum-free manufacturing process in Vero cells, which eliminates the use of animal-derived components like bovine serum in the culture medium. This next-generation formulation is designed to enhance safety by reducing the risk of contamination with adventitious agents and minimizing potential allergic reactions associated with animal proteins. The vaccine is used for both pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) against rabies. It works by inducing the production of neutralizing antibodies against the rabies virus glycoprotein, providing active immunity. PVRV-SF has demonstrated non-inferiority to the original serum-containing PVRV (Verorab) in clinical trials and is widely utilized in global rabies prevention programs.
