Overview

Raltegravir + atazanavir is a combination antiretroviral therapy used for HIV-1 infection treatment. This regimen combines two different antiretroviral drug classes: raltegravir (an integrase strand transfer inhibitor) and atazanavir (a protease inhibitor). This combination is particularly attractive as a "nuke-sparing" option that excludes nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) and ritonavir, potentially reducing metabolic toxicity. Raltegravir inhibits HIV integrase, preventing viral DNA integration into the host cell genome, while atazanavir selectively inhibits HIV-1 protease, preventing the formation of mature virions. Studies have shown this combination maintains virologic control in treatment-experienced patients and may improve metabolic parameters, particularly lipid profiles, when used as a switch strategy from other regimens[1][5].
