This is a combination antiretroviral therapy consisting of three small molecule drugs used in the treatment of HIV-1 infection. Raltegravir is an integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI) that blocks the action of HIV integrase, preventing viral DNA from integrating into the host genome. Atazanavir is a protease inhibitor that prevents viral replication by inhibiting the HIV-1 protease enzyme, and ritonavir acts primarily as a pharmacokinetic enhancer (booster) by inhibiting cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4), thereby increasing plasma concentrations of atazanavir. This combination may be used in certain clinical scenarios where nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) are to be avoided or when alternative regimens are needed due to resistance or intolerance[1][7]. The regimen has been studied for efficacy and safety, with attention to drug-drug interactions and side effect profiles.
