This is a combination of two drugs, raltegravir and cisplatin, used concomitantly in clinical settings where patients require both antiretroviral therapy and chemotherapy. Raltegravir is an HIV-1 integrase strand transfer inhibitor that blocks the integration of viral DNA into the host genome, thereby inhibiting HIV replication. Cisplatin is a platinum-based chemotherapeutic agent that forms DNA crosslinks and induces apoptosis in rapidly dividing cancer cells. This combination may be used in HIV-infected patients who develop malignancies requiring chemotherapy. Clinical studies indicate that co-administration of raltegravir with cisplatin (and other antineoplastic agents) is generally safe and effective, with no significant pharmacokinetic interactions or increased toxicity attributable to raltegravir[1][3]. Raltegravir has a low propensity for drug-drug interactions due to its metabolic pathway (primarily UGT1A1-mediated glucuronidation), while cisplatin’s cytotoxic effects are independent of this pathway.
