Overview

This combination drug regimen consists of raltegravir, an HIV-1 integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI), and Truvada, which is a fixed-dose combination of two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. Raltegravir works by blocking the action of integrase, a viral enzyme that inserts the HIV genome into the DNA of the host cell, while emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate inhibit the reverse transcriptase enzyme, preventing the virus from replicating. This specific combination was studied by The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in a Phase 4 pilot clinical trial (NCT00881140) to evaluate its virological and cardiovascular effects compared to an atazanavir-based regimen in antiretroviral-naive HIV-infected patients.
