Overview

**Raltegravir + nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs)** is a combination antiretroviral therapy for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. Raltegravir is an integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI) that blocks the HIV-1 integrase enzyme, preventing integration of viral DNA into the host genome. NRTIs, such as tenofovir, emtricitabine, zidovudine, or abacavir, inhibit the reverse transcriptase enzyme, causing chain termination during viral DNA synthesis. This combination is recommended both for treatment-naïve and treatment-experienced patients, and is often part of first-line or salvage ART regimens. The combination is highly effective for achieving and maintaining viral suppression, especially when both agents are fully active against the patient’s viral strain[1][2][3][4].
