Overview

Raltegravir + zidovudine is a combination of two antiretroviral drugs used in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Raltegravir is an HIV integrase inhibitor that blocks the action of the viral integrase enzyme, preventing integration of HIV DNA into the host genome and thereby inhibiting viral replication[6][8]. Zidovudine, also known as AZT, is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that inhibits reverse transcriptase, an enzyme necessary for conversion of viral RNA to DNA[4][5]. This combination targets different steps in the HIV life cycle and is used as part of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) to reduce viral load and delay progression to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)[4][8].
