Overview

This is a combination of two hypnotic drugs, ramelteon and triazolam, with placebo as a control. Ramelteon is a melatonin receptor agonist that selectively binds to MT1 and MT2 receptors in the brain's suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), regulating circadian rhythm and sleep-wake cycles. It is used for insomnia characterized by difficulty with sleep onset and has low abuse potential[2][3][4]. Triazolam is a benzodiazepine sedative-hypnotic that acts as an agonist at the gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA-A) receptor, enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission in the central nervous system to induce sedation, hypnosis, anxiolysis, muscle relaxation, and anticonvulsant effects[7]. Placebo serves as an inactive comparator. The combination has been studied in crossover trials to assess their comparative effects on driving performance, cognitive function, equilibrium function, subjective sleepiness, psychomotor speed, visual attention, body balance impairment risk profile[1][3].
