Overview

Ranibizumab + dexamethasone is a combination therapy involving the intravitreal administration of ranibizumab, a monoclonal antibody fragment that inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A), and dexamethasone, a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid with potent anti-inflammatory properties. This combination is used primarily for the treatment of macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and diabetic macular edema (DME), particularly in cases where there is an insufficient response to anti-VEGF monotherapy. Ranibizumab acts by inhibiting VEGF-A, thereby reducing abnormal blood vessel growth and vascular permeability in the retina. Dexamethasone reduces inflammation and retinal thickening by suppressing multiple inflammatory pathways. Clinical studies have shown that while this combination can lead to greater reductions in retinal thickness compared to ranibizumab alone, it does not necessarily result in superior visual acuity outcomes but may reduce injection frequency and improve certain aspects of retinal microstructure[1][2][3][5][6][7].
